Alcohol in the gasoline may be good for the environment, but it's not so good for our small gas engine. Please read on.
Some gas stations, especially in the Northern states are selling the new E85 or even have high contents of alcohol in the gas, some in the 15% - 20% range. We can squeak by with 10% in out gas/oil mix, but any more can become a problem. The alcohol will thin out our lubrication oil, it can effect the neoprene crank shaft seal, carburetor pump, and if you are not using a water pump it will effect the diaphragm and rubber valves over time.
The best antidote is to find gas alcohol free. I used to ask the gas station attendant if there was alcohol in the gas, and at one time you could get a yes or no answer. Today, well I don't have to tell you about it. I have spoken with some of the engine manufacturers and there is progress being made to produce these alcohol susceptible parts in a friendly material but untill that day comes we have a simple kit available that you can add to your tool box that will quickly tell you if the gas you are purchasing is tainted with alcohol, and by how much.
